Website Cost per Month in South Africa (2026 Guide)

By Next Level Web Solutions · · 10 min read · Cost and choosing an agency

What is the website cost per month in South Africa in 2026? A small business site typically costs about R250 to R1,100 a month to keep online once it is built: hosting, a .co.za domain, business email and basic maintenance. A bare-bones site can run for around R235 a month. A site with a proper maintenance plan sits nearer R1,000, and ongoing SEO is extra.

The figures in this guide are market ranges we compiled in October 2026 from published South African price guides and the pricing pages of local hosts and platforms. Some guides are dated 2025 and we say so where it matters. They are indicative only. They are not our prices. Below we break the monthly bill into its parts, add it up per year, compare pay-monthly deals with a once-off build, and show how to cut the total.

Website cost per month in South Africa: the short answer

Most of what you pay each month is hosting, email and maintenance. The domain is small once you spread it over twelve months. Here is the monthly picture for a typical small business site.

If you are still working out the build price itself, start with our guide to how much a website costs in South Africa.

What hosting costs each month

Hosting is the biggest fixed line for most small sites. A published 2026 comparison of South African shared plans shows entry plans from about R35 a month, mainstream starter plans at about R99, and business-level plans up to about R360. HostAfrica's own pricing page lists its shared plans at R99, R139, R245 and R360 a month, and WordPress hosting from R120 a month. The same price guide suggests R150 to R250 a month as a sensible mid-tier for a business that expects to grow.

A rough guide to the tiers:

  • Shared hosting. Your site sits on a server with many others. Fine for a brochure site with modest traffic. About R35 to R360 a month.
  • Managed WordPress hosting. Tuned for WordPress, with better speed and easier backups. From about R120 a month and up.
  • VPS or dedicated. Your own slice of a server. Worth it only for heavy traffic or special software. Providers price these separately, so get a current quote rather than trusting a headline number.

Domain, SSL and business email

A .co.za domain costs about R70 to R110 a year to renew, according to a published 2026 running-costs guide. Divided by twelve that is under R10 a month. A .com is dearer at roughly R180 to R320 a year. First-year promotions are cheaper than renewal prices, so check the renewal figure before you buy.

SSL, the padlock in the browser, is free on many hosts through Let's Encrypt. Paid certificates run from R1,299 to over R5,000 a year, and a small business site rarely needs one.

Email is where the monthly bill grows. A mailbox on your own domain, such as info@yourbusiness.co.za, costs about R130 to R160 per user a month on a service like Google Workspace. Workspace is billed in foreign currency, so the rand price moves with the exchange rate. Many hosting plans include a handful of basic mailboxes at no extra charge, which is a cheaper route if you do not need Workspace features. Our guide to setting up business email on your own domain explains the options.

Website maintenance cost per month

Maintenance means software updates, security patches, backups, uptime monitoring and small content edits. A published South African price guide lists three retainer levels:

Maintenance tierTypical price per monthUsually covers
BasicR199 to R500Updates, backups, uptime checks
BusinessR1,500 to R3,500The above plus content edits and reporting
Premium or online storeR3,800 to R8,000+Priority support, store monitoring, larger changes

That guide also notes that skipping a professional maintenance plan saves roughly R6,000 to R12,000 a year, which is the saving that disappears the first time a site is hacked or breaks after an update. A separate 2025 guide for online stores gives retainers of R500 to R5,000 a month.

Not every site needs a retainer. A simple brochure site has little to update. A WordPress site with plugins does. Ask what the plan includes, how many edits per month, and the response time.

Website fees per month: a full monthly and yearly table

Putting it together, here are three realistic running-cost profiles. We built these from the mid-points of the ranges above, so treat them as examples, not quotes.

ProfileWhat it includesPer monthPer year
LeanR99 hosting, .co.za domain at R70 a year, one mailbox at R130About R235About R2,800
Typical small businessR250 hosting, domain at R110 a year, two mailboxes at R160, basic maintenance at R500About R1,080About R13,000
Busy business siteR360 hosting, domain, three mailboxes at R160, business maintenance at R1,500About R2,350About R28,200

Add an optional local SEO retainer of R2,500 to R5,000 a month on top of any of these if you want search work done each month. SEO is a separate service from keeping the site running, and the two should be quoted separately. Our guide to SEO services pricing in South Africa shows what a retainer should cover.

Website cost per year: what to budget

Yearly, the picture is simpler. A lean site costs roughly R2,800 to keep online. A typical small business with email and a basic maintenance plan sits around R13,000. A busy site with a business-level plan is around R28,000. The year-one figure also includes your build, which is a separate cost covered in our website cost guide.

Ask whether the monthly price you were quoted assumes annual billing. A host price of R99 a month may be the rate only when you pay for a year up front.

Pay monthly websites: are they worth it?

Some providers advertise a "pay monthly" website: no big upfront fee, one monthly charge that covers the build, hosting and support. It lowers the barrier to starting, and it can suit a business that wants a predictable bill. The risk is the total cost and ownership.

Here is a worked example using made-up round numbers, to show the arithmetic. These are example inputs, not market prices.

Over 36 monthsPay monthly dealOnce-off build
UpfrontR0R10,000
MonthlyR599R250 (hosting, domain, light updates)
36-month totalR21,564R19,000
Who owns the site at month 36Check the contractYou do

In this example the once-off route is cheaper by R2,564 over three years, and the gap widens every year after, because the monthly deal keeps charging the full R599. The pay-monthly route can still make sense if the deal includes real ongoing work: edits, updates and support. The questions to ask are these:

  1. What is the minimum term, and what is the cancellation fee?
  2. Who owns the domain, the design and the content?
  3. Can I take the site and move to another host if I leave?
  4. What is included each month, and what is billed extra?
  5. What happens to the site if I stop paying?

If the answer to ownership is "we do", you are renting. Renting is not wrong, but price it as renting. Our guide to choosing a web design agency covers the contract questions in more detail.

What Wix, Squarespace and Shopify cost per month

Website builders bundle hosting, SSL and the editor into one monthly price. That removes the setup but ties you to the platform. Prices below come from each platform's own pricing page, fetched in October 2026.

  • Squarespace. The South African pricing page showed three plans at about R300, R440 and R590 a month, with higher figures of R430, R620 and R850 shown alongside. The page did not label which belongs to annual versus monthly billing, so confirm at checkout.
  • Wix. Its plans page showed paid plans from about US$18 to US$40 a month on yearly subscriptions, with a free plan too. Wix says its currency and prices vary by location, so check the rand price at checkout.
  • Shopify. Billed in US dollars even on the South African page. Basic is US$19 a month when paid yearly, or US$25 on monthly billing. Because the bill is in dollars, the rand cost moves with the exchange rate each month.

Builders can be good value for a very small site. The extras are what grow the bill: paid apps, a custom email, and payment fees on stores. If you are weighing a builder against a built site, see our comparison of AI website builders versus a custom website. For stores, our companion guide on ecommerce website cost in South Africa goes through platform and payment fees.

How to cut your monthly website costs

You can keep a site cheap without making it fragile. Start with these.

  • Pay hosting and domain yearly if the host discounts annual billing.
  • Use the email included with your hosting if you only need basic mailboxes.
  • Skip the paid SSL certificate unless a client or regulator requires one.
  • Match the maintenance plan to the site. A five-page brochure site rarely needs a R1,500 plan.
  • Keep the domain and hosting in your name.
  • Remove unused plugins and apps. They add cost and security risk.

If your current site is the problem, see our guide to website redesign cost in South Africa.

How we price

Our own monthly plans are on our pricing page: Basic at R900 a month (hosting, security, backups and up to 5 change requests), Growth at R1,800 (adds SEO, up to 20 change requests and 1 extra page per month) and Store Care at R2,000 for online stores. For the build itself, after a short call you get one flat price in rand, with every inclusion in writing: what is built, what is hosted, what is maintained and who owns what. Domain, hosting and email are set up in your name from day one, and our services cover hosting, domains and business email so you deal with one team. Frequently asked questions

How much does website maintenance cost per month?

Published South African guides put basic maintenance plans at about R199 to R500 a month, business-level plans at R1,500 to R3,500, and premium or online store plans at R3,800 to R8,000 or more. What you pay depends on how many updates, edits and security checks are included, so ask for the inclusions in writing.

What does a website cost per year?

A lean site costs roughly R2,800 a year to keep online, covering hosting, a .co.za domain and one mailbox. A typical small business with email and basic maintenance is around R13,000 a year. These are running costs only. The once-off build is separate.

Are pay monthly websites worth it?

Sometimes. They lower the upfront cost and give a predictable bill, but over three years they can cost more than a once-off build, and you may not own the site. Check the minimum term, cancellation fee and ownership before you sign, and compare the 36-month total with a once-off quote.

Why does Shopify cost a different rand amount each month?

Shopify bills in US dollars, so the rand price follows the exchange rate on the day you are charged. Business email on Google Workspace works the same way. Budget a little above the current rand conversion to allow for movement.

Do I need to pay for SEO every month?

No. Setup SEO is part of a good build. Ongoing SEO is optional, and local retainers published in South Africa run from about R2,500 to R5,000 a month. It is worth paying for only if you are competing for searches that matter to your business.
